Composition and Applied Linguistics

Each year, the CAL Program offers a variety of awards to deserving graduate students. This is a competitive award process. All applications are reviewed, evaluated, and ranked. Applications that do not meet the requirements listed in this call are disqualified. Award winners will be notified via email. The award process includes nominations and applications as described below. 

 

Award List

 

Gebhard Family in TESOL Program Award for Creative Excellence - Established by Dr. Jerry Gebhard and Yoko Gebhard, this award is offered to any CAL student who is working in TESOL and Applied Linguistics.

Eligibility: Be a CAL doctoral student focusing on TESOL and Applied Linguistics and demonstrate creativity in their program work.

 

Patrick M. Hartwell Memorial Scholarships - Established in memory of Dr. Patrick Hartwell and given to a student demonstrating academic success and potential for research in Composition Studies.

Eligibility: Be a graduate student focusing on composition studies in the Composition & Applied Linguistics Ph.D. program; Be in good academic standing with a minimum 3.0 GPA and demonstrate a promise for continued academic success; Demonstrate interest in and potential for research in Composition Studies

Award for Exemplary Teaching of Literacy and Language - These two awards recognize quality teaching in literacy and language.

Eligibility: Be currently working as a literacy or language educator at an academic institution of any level; Have developed pedagogically sound materials using current research and theory; Have developed teaching methods that appeal to multiple learning styles; Have designed engaging learning activities; Use teaching practices that generate multiple types of participation

 

Award for Professional Development: Professional Accomplishments in Research Award - This award is intended for masters and doctoral students who are actively publishing research in professional journals and presenting research at national and international conferences.

Eligibility: Be a graduate student in the Ph.D. in Composition & Applied Linguistics program; Have demonstrated research accomplishments (presentations and publications)

 

Promising Future Research in Composition Award

Eligibility: Be a graduate student in the Composition & Applied Linguistics Ph.D. program; Have successfully completed the Three-Chapter / Initial Defense.

 

Promising Future Research in TESOL/Applied Linguistics Award

Eligibility: Be a graduate student in the Composition & Applied Linguistics Ph.D. program; Have successfully completed the Three-Chapter / Initial Defense.

 

Promising Future Interdisciplinary Research in Literacy Award

Eligibility: Be a graduate student in the Composition & Applied Linguistics Ph.D. program; Have successfully completed the Three-Chapter / Initial Defense.

 

The Ninacs Innovative Researcher in Composition Award

Eligibility: Be a graduate student in the Composition & Applied Linguistics Ph.D. program; Have successfully defended their dissertation. Established by the Ninacs family in honor of their grandmother Rose Magno

 

Innovative Researcher in TESOL and Applied Linguistics Award

Eligibility: Be a graduate student in the Composition & Applied Linguistics Ph.D. program; Have successfully defended their dissertation.

 

Exemplary Interdisciplinary Research in Literacy Award

Eligibility: Be a graduate student in the Composition & Applied Linguistics Ph.D. program; Have successfully defended their dissertation.
